Project update – Silvertown Tunnel

Last year, NG Bailey were awarded the £17m Silvertown Tunnel electrical works package by Riverlinx CJV.

The scope of works includes the delivery, installation, testing, and commissioning of the 11kV and LV distribution systems, along with UPS installation, tunnel lighting with a dedicated control system, evacuation panels and signage, a cable management system, and motorised control centre panels.

Silvertown Tunnel is the first crossing of the Thames to be built for road traffic in the last 30 years. The project involves the construction of a twin-bore road tunnel that will be approximately 1.4km long and able to accommodate large vehicles, including double-decker buses. It will feature a dedicated bus, coach, and goods vehicle lane, enabling Transport for London (TfL) to provide additional cross-river bus routes.

The project team is now onsite where they have successfully navigated the pre-construction phase as well as mobilising the site. As part of the team, five apprentices have started working onsite, gaining first-hand experience at such an iconic project. The team is now starting early works in the tunnel including benchmarking and early containment.

In November, the NG Bailey Silvertown team gave back to the borough of Newham community by volunteering at Food4All, who provide hot meals and food parcels to vulnerable residents. The team was welcomed into the kitchen to help with food preparation, cooking, packing, and labelling, readying packages for the local community.

The team will deliver further social value in the community with more volunteering and school engagement projected for the future.

The Silvertown Tunnel is on schedule to open in the first half of 2025.
