A day in the life of our apprentices
When you undertake an apprenticeship with us, your role incorporates a variety of different tasks, activities and projects, so it’s likely that no two days will be ever the same.
By working with different departments and people across our business, it allows you to gain a better understanding of what we do, develop key skills and qualities relevant to your role and build key relationships with others.
We’ll let some of our apprentices to tell you about their roles with us:

Olivia - Quantity Surveyor
"As a quantity surveyor you work hand in hand with all project team members including project engineers, site engineers and the project manager. The main purpose of my role is to manage the costs on a project, making sure things are kept within budget wherever possible. In my day to day job, I have the responsibility of managing subcontractors on a range of different projects, which includes making sure they undertake the work that has been priced and agreed, and in return, they get paid for the work they do."

Jack C - Building Services Engineer
"My day to day tasks are not only varied and challenging, but also rewarding. The people I work with are always willing to help and provide assistance at the drop of a hat, as well as being friendly and encouraging. I’m currently working with the electrical team, and some of the tasks I’m carrying out include creating design drawings for projects, calculating sizes of cables and testing electrical fittings to ensure that they work properly."

Tom - Electrical
"I’m working on a project in Sheffield at the moment, which sees me on site and ready to start work early at 7am. My first task is to get all my tools together and make sure I have everything I need for the day ahead. If I'm using any equipment, I do all my pre-work checks to make sure I carry out my work safely. I also take part in site toolbox talks, which offer everyone the chance to discuss any important issues that could affect our work on site and report any problems."

Jack K - Quantity Surveyor
"Throughout the first year of my apprenticeship I’ve worked within different departments of our engineering business. I’ve worked within the estimating team to understand how we price our projects, with procurement, who are the team that buy all our materials and anything else we may require for a project and within the Commercial team, who manage the money aspect of a project. All of this has offered me a really good insight into the main activities of my role and prepared me really well for the rest of my apprenticeship."

Stacey - Building Services Engineer
"Throughout my apprenticeship there has always been strong support from my colleagues and there is always someone available to ask and someone willing to help. I’m currently working within the estimating team where during a typical day I’m reviewing the requirements of different projects and any related drawings. As part of this process I have been interacting with our clients, subcontractors and suppliers, which has really helped me to develop my communication skills."

Scott - BSE Planner
"Typical planning activities for me include monitoring the progress of our projects and reporting against any key activity targets. Working with the latest software is a really important part of my role and allows me to work with large amounts of data and filter it into a format that our engineers and management teams can understand and use."
