Plymouth office welcomes work experience students

In July, a group of secondary education students successfully completed a week of work experience with our South West Engineering team.

The four students, who study in year 10 and year 12 at Plymstock and Plympton Academies, were welcomed by our Plymouth office and given an insight into the world of engineering and the specialist work we do at NG Bailey.

At the beginning of the week, the students were set a project, which required them to work together to design a new dockyard. Following this, the students spent time with colleagues in different departments to learn more about their roles, the work they undertake, and were then asked to complete specific tasks related to these roles. 

Through this approach, the team aimed to give the students a deeper understanding of the world of engineering and how these different disciplines work together to deliver a completed project. It also offered them the opportunity to consider what role they may want to pursue in the future, should they decide to work in the engineering industry.

On their final day with us, they presented their dockyard project to a group of colleagues, consisting of those they had spent their time with over the previous few days, together with Nick Bargewell, Operations Manager. The presentation was very well received, and everybody was very impressed with their delivery and attention to detail. 

Nick commented: “We really enjoyed hosting our work experience students at the Plymouth office. It was a very successful week, and I must commend all the students for their professionalism during their time with us, as well as their level of engagement and enthusiasm whilst undertaking the tasks set for them. 

“They all did well during their presentation, and it was great to see them suggesting sustainable resources and materials for their new dock yard construction, which they named ‘Manella Dock’”. 

A great initiative by the Plymouth office, well done to everybody involved.
